40 years ago

Cricket: Brechin took on Perth at North Inch, Perth on Saturday, May 19. A perfect batting wicket and pitch but the Brechiners put up a dismal performance. The batting will have to improve if Brechin hope to keep up at the top. Too many players chasing after the runs instead of settling themselves in before the run scoring.

30 years ago

Football: Newly promoted Brechin have a marvellous start to their first season in Division 1. With a bye in the first they are drawn against the League Cup holders Celtic in the second. The first leg will be played at Glebe Park on Wednesday, August 24, and the second on Saturday, August 27, at Celtic Park. The match will be all-ticket as the capacity at Glebe Park is only 7,500.

50 years ago

GOlf: Bob Kerr who took up duty last week as golf pro at Edzell, belongs to the village and was caddying on the course at the age of six. Now he is 60 and back from the USA after 35 years as professional at various clubs including Grey Rocks and Matis Beach in Quebec, at Cornwall, Ontario and in Nova Scotia. Bob learned his golf at Edzell under pros Sandy Lindsay and Gilbert Robb. He became one of the best golf instructors in Canada.

Football: Douglas Low and Thomas Aitken of Brechin (George, Cant, reserve) were in the Angus team which fell 2-0 in the final of the Scottish Police Cup, played at Links Park.

30 years ago

Football: Angus General Purposes Committee has agreed unanimously to give a civic reception to Brechin City FC for their achievement in gaining promotion to Division 1. Councillor Robert Forester, Forfar, said: “They have done so well and we are rightly proud of them.”
