Alcohol policy clarified
Sir, In response to one of your correspondents last week I wanted to point out that it has been, and remains, the policy of Round Table to ensure that any alcohol prize, won at Pageant, is collected by an adult on behalf of any individual who is, or even appears to be, under the legal age for consuming alcohol.
This policy, we know, was put into rigorous practice by Round Table at the most recent pageant and some friends and visitors to the pageant on the day can attest to this and have indeed been in touch with me to tell me so.
I was approached at the park on the afternoon by a Constable on duty who advised me that he had had a constructive discussion with members of one stall about the fact that they had departed from such or similar a policy.
The Police officer felt that there was no intended or deliberate effort to conflict with common sense, nor indeed the law, and he felt he received full support, agreement and cooperation from the stallholder.
Related to this I would be most grateful if your pages could extend our thanks to Tayside Police for their most effective operation on the day.
As I pointed out in your columns immediately in the wake of pageant, those who fired water pistols represented a miniscule proportion of those who attended the event.
The nine remaining members of Round Table who are, in the main, responsible for the organisation of what is a large event and a logistical 'challenge' clearly found this difficult to manage both strategically and in practice, particularly in view of the fact that some of the water fired was indeed fired in sight of some supervising adults and parents.
It is equally understandable that a few hardworking and often overstretched members of the beat constabulary and the Road Management Division would have been unlikely to have had much impact on these particular issues.
My own preference would be to thank and congratulate the Police rather than displace responsibility for the actions of others on to small groups whose only wish is to see to its conclusion, on behalf of the community, a successful pageant.
Yours etc.,
John B. Cavanagh
