Edzell form flood action group

Residents in Edzell turned out in their droves to attend a public meeting hosted by the Scottish Flood Forum (SFF) in Inglis Memorial Hall on Monday, January 21.

The purpose of the meeting, which was led by Paul Hendy, a director of SFF, was to establish a community flood action group to help with recovery after flood events.

Mr Hendy said: “Recovery is worse than the flood event itself.”

He added that local authorities are not geared up for the recovery process. He said that flood groups can tailor recovery to local communities as it is carried out by local people who are known, trusted and have local knowledge.

The Edzell Community Flood Group’s main goal is to ensure that Edzell will never flood again and they have outlined aims to help achieve this.

The group, made up of 10 committee members, will be looking at ways to divert water from the village in the event that the Wishop burn overflows again. The group have also outlined culverts as an issue that needs further investigation.

The group also hope to establish who has ownership, and therefore responsibility, of the Wishop burn. Another of their aims is to provide flood protection for those at risk in the event of another flood.

The group are set to met on Monday, January 28 at 7.30 p.m. in the Cottage and all are welcome to attend. For more on the group, you can visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/EdzelFloodIssue.

Mr Hendy will also be at the Cottage every Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m., carrying out a drop-in clinic for those who wish to talk to him privately.
