Last ceremony enjoyed
Sir, On behalf of the now disbanded No.85 Branch of the Normandy Veterans' Association I would like to express our gratitude to the large number of people who attended our recent farewell event, held in the Gardner Memorial Church garden.
A commemorative plaque depicting the Normandy Landings, created by the skill of local master sculptor Tom Church, was unveiled by D-Day veterans Orland Gallaccio and myself Joe Monro, following a moving service of dedication by our padre Rev. Jim Drysdale.
This plaque was made possible mainly by generous donations from Matrix Engineering Ltd, Brechin and GlaxoSmithKline, Montrose who also sent representatives to the ceremony. It was a pleasure to meet and welcome them, along with veterans from Dundee, Kirriemuir, Montrose, Edzell and others.
Following the blessing we all proceeded to the Bridgend Lounge where an impressive meal with multiple choice dishes had been prepared by Scott in the function room, especially decorated in wartime flags and bunting, with wartime background music. The committee and helpers of the veterans must be thanked for their valiant efforts and hard work throughout.
The evening ended with a few speeches, a toast and a blessing from our padre.
This final gathering of old comrades from the D-Day Landings will be remembered with joy and a little sadness, but we hope that future generations will see our plaque set into the church garden wall and say 'We Will Remember Them.'
Yours etc.,
Joe Monro,
Vice Chairman 85 Branch
