Petition from residents up in arms over plans to close Edzell Library

Sir, Readers will be aware of Angus Council's plan to close Edzell Library at the end of March, despite it being a much used and highly valuable service to the community.

The closure of the Library was discussed at the recent Inveresk Community Council meeting in the presence of the leader of the Council, a senior services manager of cultural services and one other councillor.

The Council claimed a mobile library would provide Edzell with a "better service". (The village currently enjoys nine hours a week in a beautiful, properly appointed library with computer and internet access. The mobile library would be for two hours a week parked outside the existing library).

The meeting left many disappointed that the Council appeared unable to give details of the savings which might be made by closing the library or the costs involved in the new mobile service.

The council were also unable to give any indication as to when the mobile library service would commence, what facilities it would have or what time or day of the week it would call. It was also felt unreasonable that no prior consultation had taken place.

A petition signed by over four hundred villagers was handed to the leader of the Council at the meeting. Subsequently the chairman of Inveresk Community Council has written a detailed letter of protest stating that the overwhelming conclusion of the meeting was to ask Angus Council to reconsider the proposal and retain the library facility in Edzell. Several individuals have also written similar letters of protest.

One concerned group has requested an urgent meeting with the leader of the Council in order to table a proposal which will enable the Council to keep Edzell Library open while still providing the Council with the necessary savings which we all appreciate have to be made.

Yours etc.,

Moira Clyne,

High Street,

Edzell.
