Transition town seminar planned

AT ITS first meeting of the New Year, The City of Brechin and District Community Council will agree to host a seminar on Transition Towns in St Andrew’s Church hall on February 9 from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Transition groups focus on finding ways to shift away from our dependence on oil, and towards the creation of strong communities where people find ways to live life more locally, create low energy solutions and make the places we live feel more vibrant, exciting and rewarding in the process.

The objective of the seminar will be to help interested local residents find out about transition towns and see if a working group can be established to investigate what can be done to make Brechin a transition city.

Eva Schonveld from transitionscotland is the lead speaker and she will be discussing about what other groups are doing or planning. Organisers hope to have a speaker from the group in Laurencekirk to tell the seminar what they are doing.

Convener of the community council, Grahame Lockhart, is encouraging people to attend.

He commented: “We are being made increasingly aware of how climate change is affecting all of us from the over-dependence on oil as a fuel and that we need to do something to help ourselves meet the challenge that presents.

“I hope that as a community we can work together to look, amongst other things, at how we can support local enterprises, local producers and perhaps even explore how we can establish a more environmentally-sustainable and less expensive energy deal for our community.

“This is something we all need to think about and to work together to improve our own community and environment. Please think about this and follow details next week about registering you attendance at the seminar on February 9.”
