Waterson art an attraction
Sir, "People need truth on Waterson Art" said latest on the Waterson saga that offered nothing new except for a suggested alternative Gallery at Maisondieu Church.
Concerns were raised of which art lovers are aware and these are obviously more pronounced in the much larger Maisondieu Church!
I note that praise is heaped on Waterson as an etcher and cold water poured on his skills as a painter. I am wary of artists who criticise "one of their own" and the people of Brechin can read and form their own opinion of Waterson by reading the report in Brechin Library where they will find an unbiased appraisal of David Waterson the artist, by Dr John Morrison, professional art historian and senior lecturer at Aberdeen University
Some people have chosen to sound off in the press whilst other members of the public have taken practical steps to provide the answers to three of the most important issues ā a summary of past events, complete list of framed works by Waterson and reconciliation to the list provided by D B Thom in 1974.
I agree that the Memorial Collection was gifted to and belongs to the people of Brechin and I also agree that, with sufficient space, it makes sound business sense to try and incorporate the gallery within the Old Town House.
And whilst an art collection may not be everyone's 'cup of tea' it surely behoves us all to get behind something that could attract art lovers from all over the globe that fits nicely into Brechin's cultural position but please, not on the stairwell of the Museum - an insult to the man's talent!
My choice however for the David Waterson Gallery is the old Registrars with a coach drop off point outside with staff trained under strict commercial guidelines with mystery shoppers and the like.
There is nothing to be gained by clouding the issue with such vulgar comments as "DIY art gallery" and "analysed for any political incentives."
People need to see the truth and the truth can only be recognised when the actual paintings are returned to Brechin where they rightfully belong!
Yours etc.,
John Ritchie
