Down Memory Lane rss

40 years ago

The Dalhousie Bridge over the West Water at Priestoun, Edzell, which was built in 1877, has been closed for strengthening and repair. Earlier in the year, although not an official diversion route, and with a six-ton load restriction- this bridge was used by vehicles during the temporary closure of the West Water Bridge on the main Edzell/Brechin route at Inchbare.

Orienteering: Angus Youth got their first introduction to orienteering at Edzell last Sunday when leaders and members from most of the Angus youth clubs took part in a weekend course on this new sport which is so popular in Scandinavia.

Pictured is members of the  campaign - called TUBS Tidy Up Brechins Streets -at the launch alongside member of the Brechin Business Association (who sponsored the campaign) and members of the police.

The warmth and sunshine of the past week or two have emboldened the City Band to announce that they will play a programme of music in the Bandstand in the Public Park on Monday evening. The Bandstand was recently repaired and provided with a vandal defying concrete floor with money left by the last Provost Mitchell.

40 years ago

Golf: With a net 55 Dick Robertson, Brechin (playing off 18) won the handicap section and the Christieson Cup in the open golf tournament at Taranty on May 24. He was six strokes ahead of the runner-up, D. Bell, Forfar. Three players with returns of 70 tied for the scratch trophy, the Uig Villa Cup, which went to A. B. May with the best last three holes. The other two were J. L. Clark, Stonehaven and W. Taylor, Brechin.

A special three-coach diesel train from Glasgow (run by the Stephenson Locomotive Society and the Strathspey Railway Society) to tour North-east branch lines which now have no regular passenger service, included the Montrose - Brechin line (closed 1952). It was the first passenger train to come into the Brechin station since the days when the pensioners went on their annual outings by rail.

Swimming: Brechin Beavers Swimming Club have been very active recently with many of their young people gaining one mile and two mile distance swimming awards.

Brechin Primaries were very successful in the 1982/83 Mathematics Project Competition for Scottish Primary Schools. Both Andover and Maisondieu have won awards.

Under the present financial arrangements the Council pay £816 per annum to the government for the 55 temporary houses at Cookston Crescent. Now the cost will be £1,320 Treasurer Howe explained. The Council had put up the rents of these houses at the same time as they put up other rents and the government was simply taking a larger share.

Tennis: Under the auspices of the newly formed Tennis Club, nine couples took part in an American tournament at the Argyll Street courts on Thursday. The prizes were awarded to - Peter Gellalty and Elizabeth Eunson; consolation Alan Petit and Isobel McKenzie.

Cricket: IT was a good fast wicket at Brechin on Saturday, and with the homesters batting first, a goodly total of runs was looked for, but against some straight bowling of fairly good length, Brechin cut a rather sorry figure. The prof was top scorer with 19, the only double figures in the whole Brechin innings.

At Tuesday’s meeting of Arbroath and District Employment Committee Mr Ernest Smith, manager of Brechin and District Employment Exchange, reported that the total number of unemployed in Brechin at May 29 was 160. This number showed a decrease and was 42 lower than last year.

Football: The Brechin Boys were defeated by Arbroath Rancel by penalties, after extra time. having drawn the match 2-2. Brechin were naturally disappointed to lose this cup final, but they can take a great of credit not only from this game, but the way they have played this whole season. The match was a very evenly contested game with the Arbroath Boys pretty lucky in getting their goals, the second being offside.

Brechin Dramatic Society’s decision to give the home fans the opportunity to see their two 1983 Festival plays - one of which went all the way to the Scottish final - “played on their home ground” was a popular one. The audience in the City Hall last Wednesday was large with more young people than usual - and very appreciative.

Millar Square (after the Provost), Mitchell Square (after the former civic chief who remembered Brechin so generously in his will) were suggested as names for the Westwood housing scheme, but after some discussion it was agreed to keep the familiar ‘Westwood’ - as Councillor Mrs Hogg said: “It sounds better”, and in the words of Treasurer Howe, “whatever you call it, it will always be Westwood.”

MR David P. McRitchie, who in the 44 years since he set up as an ironmonger in Brechin has become something of an institution in the High Street, has sold his business to Mr W. Hutcheson (though old customers will be pleased to learn that he is still to be around at ‘No 78’).

It features Murdo Fraser, who was MSP for Mid Scotland Fife, during a visit to Careston Pruimary school to congratulate pupils on winning an award from CBI Scotland in recognition of their efforts to raise money to buy equipment for their school.

Scotland - and particularly Edzell - is tops with American sailors, marines and air force personnel, it was announced at the US Navy Base, Edzell, by Captain Isaiah C. Cole. Welcoming guests to a cocktail party in consolidated mess at the weekend, Captain Cole, commanding officer at the US base at Edzell, said that last year they had the best retention record of any base in the naval communications command.

Football: Brechin Matrix kept up their challenge to retain the league shield with a good away win over Montrose Roselea. After Roselea scored, Tocher was moved to the centre where he notched two goals before returning to centre half.

Cricket: Brechin took on Perth at North Inch, Perth on Saturday, May 19. A perfect batting wicket and pitch but the Brechiners put up a dismal performance. The batting will have to improve if Brechin hope to keep up at the top. Too many players chasing after the runs instead of settling themselves in before the run scoring.

30 years ago

Football: Newly promoted Brechin have a marvellous start to their first season in Division 1. With a bye in the first they are drawn against the League Cup holders Celtic in the second. The first leg will be played at Glebe Park on Wednesday, August 24, and the second on Saturday, August 27, at Celtic Park. The match will be all-ticket as the capacity at Glebe Park is only 7,500.

50 years ago

GOlf: Bob Kerr who took up duty last week as golf pro at Edzell, belongs to the village and was caddying on the course at the age of six. Now he is 60 and back from the USA after 35 years as professional at various clubs including Grey Rocks and Matis Beach in Quebec, at Cornwall, Ontario and in Nova Scotia. Bob learned his golf at Edzell under pros Sandy Lindsay and Gilbert Robb. He became one of the best golf instructors in Canada.

Football: Douglas Low and Thomas Aitken of Brechin (George, Cant, reserve) were in the Angus team which fell 2-0 in the final of the Scottish Police Cup, played at Links Park.

30 years ago

Football: Angus General Purposes Committee has agreed unanimously to give a civic reception to Brechin City FC for their achievement in gaining promotion to Division 1. Councillor Robert Forester, Forfar, said: “They have done so well and we are rightly proud of them.”

50 years ago

Brechin’s new High School will need to be larger than the present building, even though the population of the district did not increase, declared rector S. Anderson at Brechin Rotary Club. One reason was that the school leaving age would probably be raised to 16. He thought that this would come about earlier than some people expected.
