IT’S NOT just the older folk who are sorry to see the bulldozer at work knocking down first one stretch of old Brechin and then another.
We think that there will be tears in Andover School the day it reaches the corner of Montrose Street and Nursery Lane and the wee shoppie where they have spent their sweetie money comes down in dust and rubble.
The wee shop and Miss Meg Napier behind the counter are bound up with so many of their memories.
Last week she was invited to the school, there she was presented with a beautiful clock on behalf of staff and pupils.
30 years ago
PUPILS of Brechin High School are to undertake any jobs round the town, either for the community of for individuals, as a ‘thank-you’ gesture for the support received in raising funds for the school’s new minibus.
Mr Bruce May, convener of the fund-raising committee, said it was hoped people would write in with suggestions of what they would like to see done, so a start could be made in the spring.
He said: “It could be anything from painting a fence to helping in the garden.
“There must be some things which older people especially, can no longer do themselves, and, if we get the response we hope for, it will be a pleasure to do it.”

Tayside Regional Council has launched a freephone helpline to make sure as many people as possible claim benefit under the new Council Tax which takes over from the Poll Tax in April, 1993.
Councillor Betty Paterson, Convener of Finance said: “Surprising numbers of people will be able to claim benefit under the new Council Tax. If in doubt you should ring the freephone for advice.”
To reinforce the message, 2000 posters carrying the freephone number are being distributed throughout the region to statutory and voluntary organisations.
