Celebration of reading
MSP for Angus South, Graeme Dey, has welcomed the launch of Scotland’s first ever ‘Book Week,’ which will take place in late November.
It has been organised by Creative Scotland in tandem with the Scottish Book Trust.
Author Ian Rankin and poet Liz Lochhead, alongside Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop, announced the news at the Writer’s Museum in Edinburgh this week.
Book Week Scotland will see a full programme of free events across the country designed to celebrate books, and encourage people to read more often.
Mr Dey said; “Reading is one of the most important habits of a lifetime, one which can open the imagination as well as teach us new things, and children should be encouraged from an early age to pick it up.
“In Scotland we have a fine tradition of literary creativity, stretching from modern day ‘tartan noir’ back to the early pamphlets produced in our era of Enlightenment, via luminaries such as David Hume and James Hogg.
“Having a dedicated Book Week, coming after the Edinburgh Book Festival, will encourage people right across the country to learn more about Scotland’s literature, themselves, and where knowledge and learning can take them.
“I look forward to seeing events take place in Angus which will celebrate our local creativity.
“We already have schoolchildren eagerly involved in our annual Angus Book Awards, now in their seventeenth year, and I am sure locals will jump at the chance to be involved in the first ever Scottish Book Week.”
