cold weather payment?
Residents of Brechin and Forfar, who are entitled to receive Cold Weather payments, have been advised to check that they have received payments for the week of January 11 to 17 after the recent cold weather.
Angus MP Mike Weir has received notification that a payment had been triggered for that week for postcode areas DD8 and DD9.
Cold Weather Payments are made from the Social Fund to certain recipients of Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance or Pension Credit during periods of very cold weather.
To ‘trigger’ the payments, the average temperature at a specified weather station must be recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees or below for seven consecutive days.
The scheme runs from November 1 to March 31 each winter.
The payment is a fixed amount for each week of cold weather of £25 per week.
For Winter 2010/2011, 17.2 million individual payments were made worth £430.8 million.
Commenting on the announcement Mr Weir said: “Payments are made automatically to those entitled to them.
“There should be no need to make a claim, but if any constituents who think they may be entitled do not receive a payment should contact the Pension, Disability and Carers Service, or Jobcentre Plus to query the matter.
“Given the current costs of energy any payment towards bills during very cold spells will be especially welcome,” concluded Mr Weir.
