Don calls for “joined up tourism”

ANGUS North & Mearns MSP Nigel Don has met senior officials from VisitScotland to discuss the best way forward for tourism in the region. Mr Don met Regional Director Shona Anderson and North East Development Manager Jim Clarkson for talks at Stonehaven’s Ship Inn, followed by a visit to the Stonehaven Visitor Information Centre.

Mr Don said: “We know that the Victoria and Albert Museum being planned for Dundee will generate very large visitor numbers, especially in its first few years. We need to find ways of getting those visitors to come north into Angus and Aberdeenshire, and we need to tell them about the unique and fascinating attractions we have to offer.

“If people are interested in history, we have thousands of years of that in the Caterthuns, Pictavia and Aberlemno’s standing stones. If it’s scenery, we have the Angus Glens, the fishing villages on the coast and of course Dunottar Castle, as featured in ‘Brave’. Arts tourists have the House of Dun to visit as well as a pilgrimage to Catterline, and those looking for their Scottish roots will want to come here too.

“The point is to get the marketing right and to lead people through our region with really well produced information on paper and online. Most importantly, Angus and Aberdeenshire need to work together to make this happen, along with national agencies like VisitScotland.”
