Environment vital to Scotland’s economy says Don
Scotland’s natural environment is not only a major contributor to Scotland’s economic growth in terms of our ability to engage visitors and produce world class produce and products but it also plays an important part in our quality of life. The intrinsic outstanding natural beauty of Scotland from the hills to the sea defines Scotland as a great place to live, work and visit.
“Our natural environment coupled with the inspiration and energy of the Scottish people offers an excellent investment prospect,” said Nigel Don MSP for Angus North and Mearns.
“To harness the potential of our natural environment Nigel Don explains that the Scottish Government has refreshed its biodiversity strategy recognising three main challenges.
“First of all we need to increase the general level of biodiversity on land and in our seas and support healthy, well-functioning ecosystems.
“Secondly we need our people to engage with the natural world, for the health and well-being benefits that this brings; and to empower all of us to have a say in decisions about our environment.
“Finally we need to maximise the benefits for Scotland of a diverse natural environment and the services it provides, contributing to sustainable economic growth such as tourism, fishing and agriculture.”
Mr Don went on to say “We all want to live in an environment where we can enjoy our beautiful surroundings and the Scottish Government is leading the charge in biodiversity. I encourage all my constituents to get out there and enjoy the land, and to do what they can to enhance Scotland’s appeal abroad for tourists to visit a green, sustainable Scotland”
“My constituency includes important sites like the Montrose Basin and Glen Esk; with an enormous variety of birds, fish, animals, insects and plants. It is vital that we do not lose the variety of habitats which these species need, so we must employ good land management skills and ensure that our natural environment is properly valued in local decision making. Fishing and farming industries, tourism and recreation rely on marine and coastal environments that are clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse.”
