Merger of Dundee and Angus colleges takes step forward

THE PROPOSED merger of Dundee and Angus Colleges took a step forward on Friday, March 1 with the announcement of the appointment of the Principal Designate of the new organisation.

After a rigorous selection process, Christina Potter, who has been principal at Dundee College since August 2007, was appointed by the Tayside Partnership Board, the body steering the merger process.

The new college will not officially come into being until ‘vesting day’ on November 1.

The appointment of the Principal Designate at this stage of the process is essential for the smooth transition prior to the launch of a brand new college.

“The merger process is complex and intricate,” said Kish Srinivasan, chairman of the Tayside Partnership Board.

“We have, so far, established that there are no legal or financial impediments to the two colleges merging, and we have now taken the key first step to put in place the management structure for the new college.”

This Board, which includes representatives from each college’s existing boards of management, is working to help take forward the Scottish Government’s Post-16 education reforms.

Principal Potter has spent almost 30 years in the college sector, working both in England and Scotland.

Christina has served on a number of Scottish Funding Council Committees including the Collaboration and Mergers Advisory Committee, the Further Education Student Support Advisory Group and the Working Group on Funding and is currently a member of the Court of Dundee University.

“I am delighted to take on this exciting challenge,” said Christina.

“It is a great privilege to be appointed to lead the new college following the merger which I am confident will create a truly outstanding institution for the communities of Dundee and Angus.”
