Turn empty stores into pop-up shops

Pop-up shops may not be a term that many people are well acquainted with but the idea to introduce them to Brechin was suggested at the latest meeting of the City of Brechin Community Council.

The idea was mooted when the group were discussing a seminar that will discuss “A sustainable future for Brechin” this Saturday, February 9 at St Andrew’s Church Hall, St Andrew Street from 10 a.m., to 12.30 p.m.

A pop-up shop is essentially a store that is opened on a short term lease, often for only a single day, in a building that has otherwise lain empty and unused.

The suggestion came from Brechin resident Derek Harper who explained: “A pop-up store if a good way to create a buzz.

“It is basically a way that a small startup or entrepreneur who has an idea on starting up a business can try out their idea without having to pay for a long term lease.

“An example that struck me was when a girl who had an idea to start a bakery. She asked a person who owned a local property if she could have the shop on a Saturday, for just one day.

“She did a splash prior to the opening and did great sales of cupcakes on the day.

“It seems to create a little buzz and generates a bit of community spirit.”
