Understand new waste regulations

Zero Waste Scotland is hosting a free briefing in Angus to help local businesses understand the new Waste (Scotland) Regulations and how businesses will be affected.

The briefing, which will be held at The Auditorium, Angus College on March 19, will provide attendees with an overview of the new Regulations which are coming into force from January 2014.

The Regulations give businesses of all sizes, across all sectors, the opportunity to play their part as Scotland embarks on an ambitious strategy to make the most of its resources by maximising the value of waste materials and minimising their environmental impact. The Regulations contribute to the Scottish Governments Zero Waste Plan which aims to create green jobs and benefit the economy by around £175million.

These ground-breaking Regulations will require all businesses to separate paper, cardboard, plastics, metals and glass for recycling and some businesses will need to separate their food waste for collection. Once the Regulations come into force, people will be able to recycle and tackle food waste at work as well as at home.

Complying with the new Regulations will benefit firms on a number of levels. Effective waste management helps businesses to reduce operating costs, maximises the value of waste as an important resource to the wider economy and improves companies’ environmental credentials.

The Zero Waste Scotland briefings are designed to tell businesses about:- The legal requirements of the Regulations and what businesses need do to in order to comply; How effective waste management and resource efficiency can benefit businesses and the environment; How to negotiate waste contracts to meet the regulatory requirements; What support is available and how to access it; Case-studies of businesses getting on board and how they have benefited already.

The business briefing runs from 2 to 4 p.m.
