Don congratulates SCARF winners
Scotland’s National Bard may never have heard of global warming, but the MSP for Angus North and Mearns believes that Robert Burns would have been deeply concerned about climate change.
Nigel Don MSP will host a Burns Supper at the Scottish Parliament to support the work of Energy Action Scotland, a national charity working to end fuel poverty and to achieve warm, dry homes for all.
“Burns wrote some of his best poems about the environment,” said Mr Don. “The Birks of Aberfeldy’, ‘Sweet Afton’, and ‘Red Red Rose’ were all inspired by the delights of rural Scotland.”
Mr Don continued: “To a Mouse’ tells the story very well. Burns says, ‘I’m truly sorry Man’s dominion, has broken nature’s social union’ … even 200 years ago, he could see that Man’s activities were changing the environment, and not for the better.
“While we all hope, as Burns might put it, that all the seas will not gang dry and the rocks will not melt with the sun, global warming is changing our world for the worse,” said Mr Don. “And so let’s put the Bard to work, win hearts and minds and play our part in saving the planet.”
Mr Don has also congratulated three schoolchildren from his constituency who won the SCARF Calendar Awards. Scarf is an independent charity which delivers energy efficiency advice in the North East. On February 1 office workers all over Scotland will turn to the next page in their SCARF calendar to see a picture by Cameron Russell, from Whitehills School in Forfar.
Chloe Mitchell from Ferryden School, Montrose (April) and Lance Simmons-Rioch from St Margaret’s, Montrose (May) and Cameron received certificates at Holyrood at a ceremony before Christmas.
“These children showed considerable imagination and talent to win their awards,” said Mr Don. “And I am glad to say their artwork, in calendars, is now helping get the climate change message across in offices and schools across Scotland.”
