FINAL WEEK FOR SUCCESSFUL HAIRST

HOW time flies when you are enjoying yourself! That's certainly the case for the 21 Hairst Sessions and seven Saturday skirls which are now drawing to a close.
This is the final week of the programme which has been running since July 5.
The programme has once again been a great success with many visitors to Angus from overseas and the UK, plus local people, all looking for good Scottish music.
There is still an opportunity to enjoy the best of Angus traditional music as the sessions continue, starting with the Hairst Session at the Caledonian Hotel, Brechin on Thursday, August 21 at 8pm with Katherine Liley, David Adam and Chris Wright.
Katherine and David are two-thirds of 'Skelpaig', an exciting and original band with an amazing distinctive sound.
They have just released a CD by the same name, and reviews can easily be found at www.skelpaig.co.uk.
Katherine, from Skye, teaches fiddle in Angus schools.
David, from Inverness, plays Scottish Small and Border Pipes, plus flute and many whistles.
A busy musician, he also runs classes and workshops in schools, is doing a renewable energy degree project and also finds time to play with MacUmba, a celtic fusion band.
The third 'Key Artiste' for this evening's open session is Chris, a semi-exiled Tayside musician playing the cittern and guitar.
On Sunday afternoon, August 24, Kirriemuir is the location for the Farewell Hairst Session with Mike Ward and The Fishermans Friends.
The venue is Three Bellies Brae, a local session pub, and the music and songs start at 3pm.
Mike is one of the outstanding local fiddle-players, with a great driving style and subtle accompaniments, founder member of Alba, Tannahill Weavers and Fon a Bhord.
He is joined by a formidable group of fellow musicians and singers from the session at the 'Fish' in Broughty Ferry, plus local support.
All sessions are free and open to all listeners, and other singers and musicians who are welcome to join in with a song or a tune.
Please note that most venues are 'families welcome' but you are advised to confirm by telephone.
The Hairst is organised by Angus Council and details of all events can be found on www.thehairst.co.uk
Next week, after the Hairst, good music can still be found at the local informal sessions that run every week in Angus and Tayside.
Starting times can vary, best to telephone or check out the internet eg thesession.org, footstompin, tradmusic etc.
The sessions are held in Kirriemuir at Three Bellies Brae on Tuesdays at 8.30pm; Carnoustie, Aboukir Hotel and Friockheim, Star Inn, both on Wednesday evenings; Fishermans Tavern, Broughty Ferry, Thursdays.
And, of course, there is the 27th Kirriemuir Festival taking place on the weekend of September 5 to 7 - offering competitions, ceilidhs, concerts and pub sessions - see www.kirriefestival.org
