A NEW exhibition by Carnoustie artist Peter Flynn opened at the Meffan last weekend.
Entitled Mementoes, Peter's vibrant and colourful work is inspired by thoughts, feelings and sights encountered during travel around Europe and Australia, reflecting memories of time and place.

These experiences, coupled with memories and snapshots of times spent in the company of his friends and family closer to home, have brought colour and texture to Peter's work.

His intention is to convey the many emotions involved in the journey of life.

The work in this exhibition represents a new direction for Peter into a more abstract style, and an introduction of more colour into his work - the consequence of his extensive travel.

Peter studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, gaining his Diploma in Art in 1979.

He has won many scholarships and prizes during his career and has exhibited extensively throughout Scotland and beyond.

Commenting on his work, Peter said: "The stimuli from my work comes from the external influences around me in my home environment and while travelling to other countries.

"A lot of my work in the last few years has been divided between work produced in situ, while on extended visits abroad, and studio work produced at home. The visits seem to provide the inspiration for the studio based work.

"The influences distil over time and experiences and find ways to completion in the work shown.

"The pieces vary in that some are direct responses to subjects or happenings and others require a more roundabout journey to completion. Therefore some pieces are realistic and others, more abstract. "

He added: "Mementoes is about what we gather, both physically and emotionally as we travel around the world and in the world.

"In Greece for example a small window or table may have a symbolic stained glass eye placed on it to protect the family from evil, or the pot of holy basil placed at the door of restaurants and homes, to remind us of the many miracles and holy people who have travelled on the island.

"All of these have become a huge part of my work in recent years but what attracts me most to the sources is the simplicity of the people and their cultures."

The exhibition opened at The Meffan last Saturday and runs until Saturday, September 6.

The Meffan, 20 West High Street, Forfar, is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.
