A move to have the swimming pool project re-discussed failed at Monday night’s meeting of the Town Council. A motion by Hospitalmaster Young, seconded by Councillor McCourty, that for this purpose Standing Orders be suspended (which would have required a two-thirds majority of the Council to be carried) only received seven votes. Representatives of seven local business firms had written protesting against the pool on the grounds of its “crippling effect” on the rates. Some suggested a plebiscite.
The South port Bar closed its doors for the last time on Saturday night. It will shortly be pulled down as part of the Bridge Street/ Union Street redevelopment scheme.
