Art show at stroke rehab unit
THE STROKE Rehab Unit at Stracathro Hospital is the venue for a colourful display of artwork created by stroke inpatients as part of the annual ST/ART arts programme.
ST/ART is a creative engagement project for stroke participants which is delivered across Tayside. The project is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) in association with NHS Tayside.
Lead artist Jude Gove has been working with inpatients at the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit over the past three months, taking them through a creative programme using a variety of print making techniques.
Participants in the programme received both one-to-one sessions with the Lead Artist and also had the opportunity to join in weekend group sessions which are run by Jude assisted by volunteer THAT artist Fran Marquis. Participants were encouraged and supported by the artists to explore their creative interests and abilities and to discover their own potential.
On display is a selection of the wide range of the work produced by the group which feature Linocut prints as well as text and collage pieces.
Staff, family and friends will also be joining the participants to mark the end of the programme.
Chris Kelly, the ST/ART Project Coordinator, said: “It has been great to organise another successful programme at Stracathro and to see a new group of participants discover that being creative can be good for their health.
“Our relationship with the unit staff is very strong and we really appreciate their commitment which is important to the ongoing success of the programme.”
Lead artist, Jude Gove, added: “It has been a great experience to work with the team here at Stracathro and engage the patients in such a positive way.”
Sandie Japp, Charge Nurse at the unit, who has been closely involved in supporting the programme added: “We have really enjoyed Jude’s contribution this year and been amazed by the quality of work she has helped our patients produce. The different approach that the artists bring to the patients rehabilitation is very refreshing. We are really looking forward to next year when we will have Jude here for a full year as part of the medical research programme being organised by THAT.”
