BEN BEDFORD GUESTS AT MONTROSE FOLK CLUB

BEN Bedford from Illinois, USA, will be the guest at Montrose Folk Club next Tuesday, (March 16) at 8 pm in the usual venue of the Links Hotel, Mid Links, Montrose.

Ben, one of the rising stars of Americana, will be touring Scotland for the first time this month, but will be performing only in Montrose, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

With the release of his second Album, entitled "Land of the Shadows", Ben has shown himself to be an inspired and talented storyteller. With an understated intensity, he delivers intriguing sketches of America, its people, their victories and their struggles.

In its first month of airplay, Land of the Shadows reached number 1 on the Folk-DJ Charts in the USA with three songs in the Top Ten. The album has received considerable airplay throughout North America as well as proving to be a favourite of the Ian Anderson Show on BBC Radio Scotland.

As a teenager in Illinois, Ben explored many types of music but was inspired to become a songwriter after hearing performers such as Gordon Lightfoot, Guy Clark and Patty Griffin.

In 2000, he entered the University of Illinois in Urbana with the intention of becoming a history professor. He became sidetracked by his love of music and writing.

However, the influence of his background in history is very evident in the songs which he produces. From subjects such as the life of the wife of a Confederate soldier to modern problems such as homelessness, Ben takes the listener on a journey across the landscape of North America.

His songs are portraits which capture the life and vitality of his characters. He refers to his style as "American Portrait Songwriting".

Everyone is welcome next week at Montrose Folk Club to hear an outstanding young American songwriter who on future tours is likely to be performing in much larger venues.

The doors at the Links Hotel will open at 7.30 pm with Ben Bedford on stage at 8 pm.
