Brechin and District Choral Union prepare for concert
THE BRECHIN and District Choral Union’s Spring Concert will take place in St. Andrew’s Church at 3.30 p.m. on Sunday (March 24).
The Choral Union has now passed its 10th anniversary, so the audience will be perfectly familiar with the type of programme on offer.
There will be choral items, readings and instrumental interludes all incorporated into the hour long performance, a performance which will demonstrate the versatility of the choir songs ranging from Mendelssohn’s famous ‘O, For the Wings of a Dove’ to the well-loved spiritual ‘Were you There?’.
Concerts always finish with a medley of familiar tunes arranged by the Conductor, Bernard Liddiard and this spring he has chosen a selection of favourite hymn tunes as the concluding item.
David Vernon is the accompanist on the keyboard and a small string ensemble also contributes several items.
The recorder group, ‘Ma Non Troppo’ regularly perform at the Choral Union’s concerts and will be welcomed back again for this performance.
The programme is, as ever, a mixture of the secular and the sacred and of the old and the new with items from widely different geographical and historical sources such as both the continents of Europe and America.
From 18th Century England there are pieces by Thomas Arne and John Dowland.
Entrance is free but donations towards the cost of sheet music are very welcome.
It is most satisfactory to note that the audience for these concerts are always willing to linger afterwards for a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit at the close of the performance and are not inclined to hurry away.
