Barry Standerline, who has lived in Brechin for the past few years, is to feature in a new documentary on BBC Scotland.

Barry, who is originally from Lincolnshire, is set to feature in the first and third episodes of ‘The Harbour’, a six part documentary about work in Aberdeen Harbour.

The programme, which has been made by Aberdeen-based Tern TV, is said to tell stories of “life on a waterfront, pulsing with international trade and people, cargo, containers, the odd close call and not a little banter.”

Barry is in his eighth year of working as a Vessel Traffic Services officer, after previously working on boats out at sea.

Staff in Vessel Traffic Services are responsible for maintaining safe navigation in and around the harbour.

The jurisdiction of the service covers the harbour and a mile out to sea. No one in the harbour is supposed to move until they have been given the authority to do so.

It is estimated that more than 8,000 boats pass through the harbour every year. With one-way traffic in operation, Barry has said it can be “logistically challenging.”

Speaking ahead of his television debut, he said: “I’ve really got no desire to watch myself. I will be watch the rest of the series, but I will be avoiding episodes one and three! Every time I hear myself, I think- Oh my God do I sound like that?”

Luckily, Barry won’t have to try too hard to avoid the programme when it airs on Monday (October 22), as he is working that evening. He added: “I am sure my better half will be watching it.”

The documentary airs on Monday, BBC1 Scotland at 7.30pm.
