BRECHIN STUDENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS FINE ART AWARD

A YOUNG photographic and electronic media student from Brechin has been awarded the BP Fine Art Award at Robert Gordon University's Gray's School of Art Degree Show 2010, sponsored by BP.

Catherine Weir (21) was presented with her award and a cheque for 500 by Tim Smith, vice president Communications and External Affairs, BP Scotland at the launch of the Degree Show on Friday, June 18.

Catherine was recognised for her thought-provoking work on the construct of time and our technological society. The basis of her work, entitled 'In the Mean Time' was a quote from famed Japanese writer and photographer, Shuji Terayama, that people cannot see time, they can only see clocks.

Catherine's work combines modern and obsolete technology such as a box brownie camera and candles together with digital technology.

Catherine, who will graduate in July with a BA (Hons) in Photographic and Electronic Media, displayed various exhibits to the public at the Degree Show from June 18 to 26, including a candle clock, digital sun dial and a series of images of the universe captured on a box brownie.
