Cartie racing down Brechin High Street
Hallowe’en may conjure up images of ghosts and ghouls and this year will only be different because the spooks will travel down Brechin’s High Street on four wheels.
Budding racing drivers, thrill seekers, dare devils, or those just wanting to relive their youth have the chance with the introduction of Cartie Racing on Saturday, October 27.
Carties will race from the High Street along a 350 metre long course with speeds of around 25 to 30mph being expected.
It is envisaged that cartie races will start at the top of Brechin High Street for seniors with novices starting further down the street, at the cross.
Teams, with up to six members, are encouraged to start building their carts as soon as possible, with Hallowe’en cartie designs and fancy dress being encouraged.
Competitors will be split into four sections: over 16 pros, over 16 novice, 12 to 15 year pros and 12 to 15 novice.
An entry fee of £25 per team is required with entry forms available from Gavin Brymer at Brymer Butchers, 9 St David Street, Brechin, Bill Sturrock at Print Matters, Swan Street, Brechin, or at the Brechin Advertiser.
The closing date for applications is October 6.
To cover the cost of the entrance fee teams are encouraged to contact local businesses: their business name could be displayed on the cartie for a £10 sponsorship donation.
On the day of the event all teams and carties should gather in the Church Street car-park with registration starting at 9am followed by practice runs at 10am.
Racing is expected to start at 12noon.
A number of prizes will be up for grabs with awards going to: the fastest in each category; best designed cartie, best Halloween themed cartie and driver; and the most entertaining team.
Safety will be paramount, with safety barriers being erected along the route and stewards on hand to ensure the safety of spectators and competitors.
Carties are to be a maximum length of 2300mm and a maximum width of 1118mm.
There must be four wheels, one on each corner, with all wheels being in contact with the road during normal running.
Ground clearance of at least 50mm is recommended.
Brakes must be in good working order and will be checked. Braking must operate on at least two wheels on the same axle and must be able to hold the cartie on the starting ramp.
Only one person shall be on the cartie at one time and the seat must be bolted in place.
Steering must be done with the use of a steering column. Carties with steering by rope etc., will not be accepted.
So, whether you are an experienced cartie competitor or have never been on a cartie before you are encouraged to take part.
Carts must be built a couple of weeks before the event to be inspected, so go search your garage, loft or shed for old pram wheels and pieces of wood and start creating and building your own cartie.

Food will be provided by The Stables. Keep an eye out for more information on how to book a table.
