DANCE STUDENTS' SHOWCASE AT THE SPACE

CONTEMPORARY dance students at Dundee College have had to develop perfect timing for IndepenDance Day, which sees 19 degree students choreographing pieces for 23 of their colleagues on the HNC programme.

Each of the degree students has had to create a piece, between 10 and 15 minutes long, which will be danced by HNC students.

This has involved some complex timetabling as the HNC students continued with their own course work as well as learning their fellow students' pieces.

"Preparing for this production meant that the degree students had to display strong discipline in terms of timing," commented director Lee Lappin.

"With some of them creating pieces involving as many as five HNC students it has been a real challenge just co-ordinating the two classes so that they could work together.

"The students have met these challenges, however and have matched a high standard of choreographic work with excellent performance skills in what is a very varied programme."

As if overcoming any time-table problems wasn't enough, one student decided to incorporate a more challenging tempo to his piece.

Dancer, Matthew Lackford has created his own music with the help of local professional musician, Andy Williams and composer, Alex Clarkson.

The trio has composed and developed a piece with a tough timing signature, they have been working in nines.

"Dancers usually work in eights, keeping time by counting one to eight, I am trying to expand their musical and rhythmical knowledge using this unusual format," said Matt.

IndepenDance Day runs on Wednesday and Thursday (two separate shows) March 3 and 4, curtain at 7.30 pm.

Tickets (6 and 4 conc.) from The Space Box Office call (01382) 834934.
