KIRRIEMUIR PLANS FOR BON SCOTT CONCERT
KIRRIEMUIR plans to mark the memory of its famous rock son Bon Scott with a tribute concert are rolling ahead.
DD8 Music are busy organising this year's "Rock On 'Bon! - A Salute to Bon Scott" event for the fourth year running, which will rock the Kirriemuir Town Hall on Saturday, May 2.
DD8 Music is a voluntary constituted community group that was established in 2005 by its founders Steven Gibbons and Kieran Andrews who wanted to provide opportunities for local musicians to rehearse and perform music.
In late 2005, David Milne introduced himself to the group with an idea to pay tribute to the AC/DC frontman who was born in Kirriemuir. The group organised the memorial stone for Bon Scott in Cumberland Close, which lies alongside others for famous sons of the town, and a performance at the Kirriemuir Town Hall to celebrate the life of the rock legend.
Following the event the group received overwhelming support and gratitude for the work they had done, and it was decided to make the tribute to Bon Scott an annual event. Since then, the event has gone from strength to strength, and is now a sell out every year.
In 2006, DD8 Music was approached to organise Kirriemuir's Live In The Den outdoor festival. DD8 Music took the project on and held a very successful event with a large turnout and great atmosphere.
The group returned to The Den in 2008 with another fantastic Live In The Den, attracting excellent bands to play, such as 'The Big Big Sound' and 'The Trade'.
A DD8 Music spokesperson said: "The event was a huge success, and due to public demand we now intend to make this another annual project for the group to organise."
As well as holding large events DD8 Music have also held smaller, more regular, events in the local Guide Hall. The Guide Hall gigs have provided local bands with the opportunity to perform their music, and given local fans the opportunity to see their friends perform and enjoy their musical talents.
DD8 Music have also recorded songs written and performed by local bands, and have created a compilation CD. As the closest recording studio is in Dundee, it can be very costly, and so DD8 Music provide the bands with an opportunity that they may not have had otherwise.
This year, the Rock On Bon! event will be headlined by AC/DC tribute band High Voltage, supported by local bands Sonnet 65 and Anticapitalista. Furthermore, a spokesperson said: "We have also arranged with two of the local pubs, The Gairie and The Ogilvy Bar, to have live bands playing during the day.
"We have found that the event has been of great credit to Kirriemuir, attracting visitors from all over Britain to join us for the celebrations.
"We are hoping for a good turnout this year, the fourth year running that such an event has been staged, and we have been overwhelmed by the growing support."
Don't miss Rock On Bon! on Saturday, May 2. All ages are welcome to the event and tickets are priced 8 for adults and 4 for children under the age of 14.
Tickets can be bought in advance from The Star Rock Shop, Kirriemuir, from The Toy Castle, Forfar, or can be bought at the door on the night.
The Gateway to the Glens Museum in Kirriemuir has kindly put on a display of Bon Scott and AC/DC memorabilia for locals and visitors to enjoy.
The display is in place now and will run until after the Bon Scott event has taken place.
