The life of Catherine Hollingworth

Brechin Town House Museum’s latest exhibition will celebrate the life of Catherine Hollingworth OBE.

The exhibition will be on display Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm until November 3.

This will coincide with a talk by Steve Nicoll of the Friends of Brechin Town House on the life and work of Catherine Hollingworth OBE which will take place on Tuesday, September 25, at 2pm at the museum where entry is free.

The exhibition features a fascinating collection of objects and memorabilia belonging to Catherine and her family.

Catherine Hollingworth was born in Brechin in 1904, into a family background of music and drama and holidayed in Glen Esk and Tarfside where her grandparents, the Inglis, lived.

She lived for a time in Bank Street in Brechin and at Trinity at a house named The Elms.

Catherine became a pioneer in speech therapy and children’s theatre.

Educated at Brechin High School and The Royal Academy of Music in London, she became Aberdeen’s first teacher of speech in 1941, and Superintendent for Aberdeen Education Committee in its Department of Speech, Drama and Speech Therapy.

Catherine died in 1999 - a commemorative plaque in Aberdeen honours her pioneering work.
