TRADANGUS PROGRAMME IN FULL SWING
THE programme of traditional music put together by TradAngus in the wake of the demise of the Angus Council backed Hairst sessions is now in full swing.
A TradAngus-Tayroots Session will take place on Thursday, August 5 at the Ship Inn, Arbroath with two great singers - Maureen Jelks and Lesley McLuckie plus strings from Gordon Ewan providing the audience with Dundee songs, ballads, wee songs and tunes.
Maureen is a great Dundee singer and workshop leader, probably best known for her recordings on 'Coorse and Fine'; Lesley, from Maureen's singing classes, is now a regular singer at the Broughty Ferry session.
Gordon is an avid fiddle enthusiast, never tiring of examining them and trying them out, and will be providing some fine old Scottish tunes on the fiddle, and possibly cello.
There will be some other musicians and singers supporting these open sessions, and all are welcome to listen to the best of Angus music and perhaps join in with a tune or a song.
The Sunday afternoon session on August 8 at 3 pm is at the Glenisla Hotel, Kirkton of Glenisla with Sinsheen and Ian Kinnear.
A lively duo, Sinsheen are Christine Kydd and Barbara Dymock and the session will offer fine songs, solos, duets and harmonies, with guitar and bodhran.
Both are well-known singers and workshop leaders, former members of Chantan, Ceolbeg and Fon a Bhord.
Ian makes, repairs, sets up and teaches and plays the Scottish small pipes.
Established as a pipe-maker in 1993, his pipes are played all over Scotland and worldwide and can be heard on many recordings.
A unique Scottish instrument, the small pipes in various forms co-existed with the louder Highland Pipes, and the playing tradition was particularly strong right up the east coast of Scotland.
Ian's next Scottish Smallpiping Weekend Course is at The Burn, Edzell from Friday, October 15 to Sunday, October 17 -see www.scottishsmallpipes.com
On Tuesday, August 10 at 8pm there will be a TradAngus Session at Three Bellies Brae, Kirriemuir with local musicians - fiddles, mandolines, guitars, pipes etc. and singers.
