Warm welcome at Trad Angus open sessions
TRAD Angus traditional music group are running open sessions of live traditional music every week until September 9 with singers, fiddlers, pipers, mandolins, whistles, guitars, bodhrans – all instruments, singers and listeners welcome.
The afternoon Trad Angus session on Sunday, August 19 will be at the Glenesk Retreat, Glenesk from 3pm-6pm, with ‘Skirdechal’, the Angus Council Youth Music Group, hosting an open session of live traditional music.
Skirdechal are led by Katherine Liley, originally from Skye, who teaches Scottish Fiddle in Angus Schools. The band members are aged 10 to 19, and come from all over Angus, with a blend of traditional and modern tunes from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton, Brittany and Galicia.
The arrangements make great use of twins Ewan and Kerr Barrack’s collective arsenal of piano, accordion, percussion, flute and saxophone - well matched by fiddlers Erinn Gray, Georgina MacDonell Finlayson, Nathan and Hannah Christie, Kirsty Haynes, Robyn Oliphant and Jamie Cairns. Skirdechal have released a new CD, ‘Folk On The Water’, recently launched in June to a full house at Reid Hall, Forfar. It marks a resurgence of traditional music in Angus, and all proceeds will go towards supporting the future of the group and their aims.
On Tuesday, August 21 at 8pm at Three Bellies Brae, Kirriemuir the local Trad Angus session will feature guest Neil Paterson on Scottish Small Pipes and Tin Whistle. The Scottish Small Pipes are a unique and very old Scottish instrument, softer and quieter than the big pipes, and eminently suited to playing for listening and dancing. Neil began learning bagpipes at the age of 12 and was taught first of all by his father, Peter. He spent many years with his local pipe band at Kinross as well as spells with Torphichen, Bathgate, Kelty and Blairadam Pipe Bands. In 1991 he took up the Scottish small pipes having saved up every penny he earned to buy a set of Hamish Moore’s pipes. Neil has worked with many traditional singers and bands, plus solo gigs in Scotland and all over Europe, and more recently performed with The Carlos Nunez band and The Chieftains.
