Down memory lane

The Damacre School football team of 1957 is the subject of this week’s “Down Memory Lane” picture.

Exiled “Brechiner” Sandy Young, who now lives in Dunfermline explained: “We beat Forfar North in the second round of the McLay Cup that year, then drew one-one with Andover in the semi-final, but were beaten five-nil in a replay. Sadly, I was the goalkeeper! As luck would have it the opposing goalkeeper, that day, (John Clark) was, some ten years later, to become my brother-in-law.”

The Damcare team was:- back row from left - Alistair Gray, Sandy Young and Ian Hamilton; centre row - Ron Duthie, George Steel, James Milne, Peter Leitch and Alistair Gray; front row - Jim Vettese, Archie Knox, Michael Low, Dick Watt and Brian Findlay.

James “Peem” Milne can still be found at least once a month at what’s now the Damacre Centre, chairing meetings of the Brechin and Area Partnership.

Alistair Gray, who looked every inch a centre half, is now better known for the size of his leeks and onions rather than the length of his clearances from corners!
