AN EIGHT year old Brechin girl, Shona McLeod of Dundas Park, has won first prize in the recent “Daily Express” painting competition.
The prize was a bicycle but as Shona already had a bicycle she was asked to choose something else. She decided on a tent and a sleeping bag.
So that she can make her own choice, the “Daily Express” has sent her a cheque for £30.
Shona, who is the only child of Mr and Mrs D. McLeod, is a pupil of Andover Primary School. She is very fond of drawing and painting.
She has already won several consolation prizes in competitions but this is her first big prize.

Thousands of the tons of gravel are being removed from the bed of the River South Esk at Bridge of Dun in an attempt to make a straighter and deeper channel. At the same time as many tons of rubble taken from the demolition of the Union Mill at Montrose are being used to fill in gaps on the north bank just below the bridge.
The work is being undertaken by Mr Leask Mackie, Balwyllo Farm, whose land was seriously affected by the floods of last October.

The JOURNEY between Edzell and Brechin will no longer be a major ordeal for commuters.
Last week saw the long-awaited opening of the underpass, part of the £9 million Brechin bypass which is the last of the three Scottish road developments.
Having endured months of endlessly changing lay-outs of cones, contra-flows and slow-moving traffic, the underpass is certain to be welcomed by locals.
And although a lot more work has still to be done before this new stretch of the by-pass is fully operational, the underpass will certainly aid the smooth passage of traffic between Brechin and Edzell in the meantime.
