From the archives: 30 years ago

The Scotch whisky industry - and Speyside in particular - was dealt another crushing blow last week with the announcement by Scottish malt distillers that, due to surplus whisky stocks combined with world-wide economic problems, 10 of their malt whisky distilleries and two dark grains plants are to cease production with the loss of around 180 jobs. One of the distilleries to close is Glenesk, Hillside.

Tayside Regional Council last week followed the Educational Committee and finally decided after more than a year’s discussion, debate and representations from the community to close four of their primary schools - Invertay, Monifieth; Dryburgh, Dundee; Fowlis, Easter, by Dundee; and Farnell, by Brechin.
