The US base at Edzell has been awarded the Travis Trophy for operational excellence for the first time.

It is the top communications centre among 100 installations world-wide of the three branches of the American armed forces. Mr Bill McMorland, Barrelwell, Brechin, a senior charge-hand driver and transportation operations dispatcher, was presented with a letter of appreciation to mark his 20 years at the base, during which time, the Navy says, he has continually displayed a “can do” attitude.

Making the presentation, Commander R. J. Wilhelm, the acting CO, said that Mr McMorland was a mine of local lore which he was bale to impact to visitors during his driving duties. It was also the last public duty for Commander Wilhelm who is going to the Pentagon.

Local people in the vicinities of Fettercairn, Tomintoul and Dalmore distilleries in the Highlands are being asked to help Whyte and Mackay Distillers complete a book on the company’s heritage.

The three distilleries were bought by Whyte and MacKay in the 1960’s and 70’s and their individual histories are being traced to be included in the book.
