Brechin’s industrial hopes received another blow last week when Angus Industrial Committee decided to allocate a sum of £85,000, previously been earmarked for Brechin for an advance factory, to Forfar.
Unfortunately for Brechin the factory has to be built before the end of March and the Scottish Development Agency owns the only land available in Brechin and such lengthy legal transactions would be necessary before it could be transferred to the District Council, then the factory could not be built within the eight months’ time limit.
Pictures by Lawrie Harris were amongst the most outstanding in the Civic Week Exhibition in the Mechanics’ Hall in June.
As visitors were delighted to find, Mr Harris can see ready subjects for his brush or pen not a stone’s throw from his home in Church Street and results are always both charming and intriguing.
Mr Harris, head of the Art department at Menzieshill High School, made good use of the summer vacation. Presently hung in Brechin Library are 15 pictures completed by Mr Harris within the past three months and past few weeks.
