From the archives: 50 years ago

Mr H. S. Bell who took up duty as headmaster at Damacre School this week, received a film projector from the congregation of Arbirlot Church of which he has been treasurer.

The party for Careston pupils, also under-school-age children, parents and friends was a happy event. There was an apple each from Mrs Scott, Nether Careston. Santa arrived with a gift for every child.

An amendment against the Bill to abolish hanging was defeated by 355 votes to 170 in the House of Commons last week. 
Among the MPs who voted for the abolition of hanging was Mr A. L. Buchanan-Smith, MP for North Angus and Mearns.
