Last week, Brechin Rotary Club met at the Burn House near Edzell, and member David Myles invited Bill Greig as their speaker.

Bill lives in Edzell and is a former political editor at the Scottish Daily Express.

He has recently returned from China and this enabled him to give an in depth look at the startling changes that have taken place there in the last 40 years.

A club spokesperson explained: “In his visit Bill steered clear of the usual tourist spots to delve into the real China and he found a country that was not always how we think it is.

“While we may have an image of a low wage metal bashing industrial giant, he found a country moving away from that, aiming to become a World leader in the service sector and leaving the low paid jobs for other countries such as in South East Asia.

“Bill has a deep grasp of all things political and he explained that a growing middle class is putting pressure on the powers that be and what will happen in the future is difficult to predict, but what is certain is that it is going to affect us all.”

Rotary member Stanley Callaghan gave Bill a vote of thanks.
