THE SKIRL of pipes was heard at the Acorn Club’s latest meeting - not the sound of the highland but the sounds of small pipes, which have many names depending of where you are: from the Northumberland pipes to the Irish pipes in other parts of Britain.
Ian Kinnear, who both makes and plays small pipes brought with him several examples of his work for members to see.
Chanters and drones are made of African hard black wood which is very heavy due to its density. Once turned on a lathe moved by treadles, the process is now much quicker due to mechanisation.
Ian played a few tunes much to the delight of the ladies. Anne Mitchell gave a vote of thanks.
