Reminiscing about life as a ship builder

Dundonian John Dein spoke to the Brechin Rotary Club about the Caledon Shipyard in his home city at their latest meeting.

John trained there as a draughtsman in the late 50s, before a later career in his own heating and ventilation business.

He spoke of dare-devil balancing acts of men working high up on scaffolding and of the various ship-building trades, including a quaintly named ‘hudder-on’ who held on to rivets as they were hammered in. John was introduced by Charlie Allison and Janice Whittick gave a vote of thanks.
