Brechin v Perthshire XI

At Guthrie Park on Saturday, Brechin schoolboy Gordon K. Smith must surely be voted the man of the match. Not only did he record his first century for Brechin in a Union fixture but also showed outstanding ability in the field when he took two excellent catches at first slip.

This seems to be the difference in the Brechin side this season- they are holding their catches and also there is more purpose and assurance in the ground fielding.

It took Brechin one hour and 52 minutes to pass the Perth total at 169 for 4 wickets.

Brechin City have signed Billy Britton, the 22 year old right back freed by Forfar. Previously he was a junior with Broughty Athletic.

Nancy Duncan, Brechin, beat one former champion in the Scottish Women’s Gold Championship at Royal Troon last week only to have to face another champion in the second round.

In the first round Nancy scored a last green victory over Curtis Cup selector Joan Lawrence, Dunfermline. Nancy was never down after winning the second hole.

She increased the margin to two holes with a birdie at the 12th. Miss Lawrence won the short 14th and squared the match.

At the 18th hole the Brechin golfer hooked her tee shot almost into the huge grandstands. But she reached the green with a superb second shot and had two putts for the match.

In the second round in the afternoon Miss Duncan was drawn against Belle Robertson, six times champion, Belle, four square after four holes, and two under par when she ended the match at the 15th green.

Brechin shocked Roselea by taking a 3-0 lead in the first half, all three goals coming from Chris Dean. The Boys eased off in the second half letting Roselea back into the game.

Brechin’s fourth goal came from Graham Thomson when Roselea’s keeper failed to hold a cross ball. A great result for Brechin in their first game.

Many thanks to Brechin Boys for the use of their park
