Boxing: Jimmy Douglas, Brechin A.B.C, gained a close points decision over his old rival, Steve Cooney (St Francis A.B.C), in the final of the Midlands district amateur boxing championships held in the Lochee Boys Club rooms, High Street, Lochee, last Thursday.
Cooney, the defending champion, took the lead in the second round but in an exciting final round Douglas caught him with a good left hand to the head and stormed to a great finish.
Jimmy won by a majority decision and was presented with the Gilbert Johnstone trophy.

Basketball: Brechin “B”, 55; Ramblers, 42.
With both Wood and McMillan on the bench with five fouls apiece, Brechin had a few anxious moments in the closing stages of this Tayside league fixture.
On court the four remaining Brechin players had to do some stout defensive work against a Ramblers five who sensed a chance of victory in the final minutes of the game.
It had all started so differently with Brechin taking an early 15-2 lead thanks to some smart interpassing and accurate shooting by Renilson, Reoch and Taylor.
Brechin maintained their advantage well into the second half and were a comfortable 17 points ahead with only eight minutes left.
It was at this stage that Brechin began to get players excluded from the game and to create problems for themselves. Brechin, however, held on to win three more league points.

Basketball: A team of eight junior players from Brechin Basketball Club travelled to Kinross last Saturday to compete in a Tayside Schools Basketball Tournament.
The tournament was arranged to give the youngsters experience in competition, with leagues of seven four-a-side teams playing each other in a round robin type competition. Each game was played nonstop over eight minutes.
The Brechin team managed to complete the tournament unbeaten due to good tactic and superior playing.
They are all now eagerly looking forward to the next tournament which is to be played in Arbroath at the end of January.
The victorious Brechin team members were:- C. Dean, M. Urquhart, D. Donaldson, G. Robertson, D. Brown, I. Slowley, B. Morrison and S. Christison.
