At the latest Brechin Rotary Club meeting, Brechin’s Scottish International angler Martin Runcie was the speaker.

Martin was in the Scottish Youth’s International Fly-fishing team that competed against English, Welsh and Irish teams at Loch Owel in Ireland earlier this month.

It was Martin’s first attempt at qualification and was a great achievement for him and for Brechin Angling club.

He gained his Scottish cap competing against the best from all over the Scotland including existing and past members of the Scottish youth team.

He spoke about the months of planning, fundraising and intensive training with the team as they prepared to compete for Scotland.

Martin proceeded to highlight the ups and downs of the events in Ireland, showing that there is a lot more to angling than just putting a rod in the water and seeing what happens.

He explained just how much thought, tactics and sleepless nights were involved.

Martin concluded by saying how much he enjoyed the event which, despite its competitive nature, had engendered much camaraderie and friendship.

Martin was thanked by Rotarian Jon Bergen for his interesting look at the world of competitive angling.
