AT LAST week’s meeting of the Brechin Rotary Club, member Steve Collis spoke of his intrepid overland journey to India as a young student in 1967.

Steve took part in this pioneering coach expedition which saw a group travel from Britain to India completely overland under the auspices of the Commonwealth Expedition.

The Commonwealth Expedition was started in 1965 to support the multicultural ideals of the Commonwealth and Steve’s culinary background saw him involved in the catering.

The 30 strong party passed through Europe, Turkey and, hard to believe these days, also through Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan before reaching Pakistan and India.

Steve’s illustrated presentation revealed some fascinating glimpses of life in these countries where, he said, often things have not changed with time standing still for the teeming masses.

Steve was thanked by Rotarian David Vernon for a presentation that had the audience spellbound.
