Three Brechin High School pupils, Callum Wilson, Danielle Taylor and Ian Smith, have just returned from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camps at Nethy Bridge. Brechin Rotary Club sponsored them to take part in this challenging programme, which was adopted by the World Wide Rotary International in 1971, and has been held each year in District 1010 since 1984.

Callum and Danielle were at last week’s Brechin Rotary Club meeting with their respective mothers, Kirsten and Carol, to describe their very full week of activities.

It was exceptionally special for Callum, and for Rotary, as it marked a second generation of Leadership awards. Back in 1988, Callum’s mother Kirsten attended a RYLA camp and so, probably for the first time ever, Rotary have a mother and son with Leadership awards, albeit 25 years apart!

The week long programme for the youngsters involved a mixture of canoeing, archery, hill walking and map reading, abseiling, kayaking, rock climbing and various other activities that invariably involve jumping into cold or dirty water.
