Working with kids in quake hit Haiti

Iain Belford and Gavin Callaghan gave an account of their work and mission to the earthquake devastated country of Haiti at last week’s Brechin Rotary Club meeting.

The club had given medical student Iain a helping financial hand so that he could travel with his friend Gavin, who is the son of Dr and Irene Callaghan of Brechin, to one of the poorest countries in the world.

Based in a small town on the border with the Dominican republic, they found a desperate situation with 300,000 dead, one million homeless and the area awash with orphans, and a hot-spot for cholera and malaria.

They described how they set about with humanitarian help, repairing buildings and making preparations for a new orphanage.

Iain and Gavin said sometimes this help would simply be to engage in playing games and reading bible stories to the children.

Club member Jim Houston gave a vote of thanks for their thought provoking presentation.
