Writers told to submit work

The subject for the Angus Writers’ Circle recent monthly competition was a Short Story, which was adjudicated by Maggie Seed.

Maggie, who works for D.C. Thomson, is the editor of the ‘My Weekly’ specials, and she also edits the Pocket Novels and the ‘My Weekly’ Annual.

She told members that she is always looking out for suitable stories.

Turning to the competition entries, Maggie told members that she had enjoyed reading them all and began by announcing the winners. They were: 1, ‘Mixed Emotions’ by Sandra Ireland; 2, ‘Internal Politics’ by Elizabeth Frattaroli; 3, ‘Home for Christmas’ by Jan Strickland. There was also a highly commended and two commended entries.

To the delight of all the members present Maggie invited the winners to submit their stories to her for publication. This included the highly commended and commended entries. Submissions had to be by e-mail with the script as an attachment.

Maggie then answered questions from members and handed out copies of the Guidelines issued to writers.

During the interval Maggie Seed was photographed presenting Sandra Ireland with her prize and the picture will appear on the ‘My Weekly’ blog. Ann Craig, vice-president, brought the evening to a close by thanking Maggie.

The Angus Writers’ Circle meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 7.30 - 10 p.m. in the Rosely Hotel, Arbroath. New members are always welcome. Details are available from secretary Sandra Ireland 01241 410346.
