Brechin High School rector Archie Bathgate recently accepted a cheque for £300 from Brechin Inner Wheel. The cheque, along with a £100 donation from Brechin Rotary Club, will be used to purchase a cow for a family in Rwanda as part of the Cow Project.

Mr Bathgate explained that the provision of a cow to a family or an individual is the one form of aid that provides enough support to lift them from poverty.

It provides an important source of nutrition through the milk, it can be sold to pay for education, clothes and healthcare and it produces manure to improve their crop yields.

Calves can also be donated to other families and give the owners an incentive to support and encourage each other and their communities. Mr Bathgate, who has visited Rwanda on several occasions, will take a group of Brechin High School pupils to there in October.
