Community groups and charities in Angus are being encouraged to apply for grants from the Al-Maktoum Community Grants programme.

A total of £22,000 is available for distributions, which groups being able to apply for grants up to £2000.

The fund supports groups delivering projects in the fields of learning and education, multiculturalist, interfaith and cultural engagement, youth development and providing opportunities for those with a physical or learning disability.

The fund has been operating since 2009 and most recently awarded Forfar Musical Society funds towards the costs of training of existing members and running workshops to attract new members with disabilities. The training will increase the understanding of disability issues and the difficulties that disabled people can face when trying to be involved in the arts.

New members will be able to take part in musical theatre in a mainstream amateur musical society and will grow in confidence and self-esteem as well as making new friends and gaining new skills.

Other groups that have benefited from the fund include Brechin Buccaneers, Dundee and Angus ADHD Support Group, Angus Special Playscheme and The Drugs Initiative Group Forfar.

Abi Abubaker, Director of Operations said: “The Al-Maktoum Community Grants programme may have a new name but its purpose to support community groups and charities in Dundee and the surrounding area hasn’t changed. Since 2009, the fund has had considerable impact, distributing over £112,000 to a diverse range of groups. Without this vital funding many groups would have been unable to fulfil their objectives. We look forward to offering continuing support to future applicants.”

Jennifer McPhail, Foundation Scotland said: “Since 2009, this fund has been making a difference to small charities and community groups in Dundee. It has supported groups working across various sectors, including residents associations, sports clubs, youth groups and more. We want to ensure that projects continue to be supported and would encourage eligible applicants to complete their application before the next deadline of Friday, February 3, 2017.”
