WITHOUT a doubt the result of the weekend for the Angus clubs was Montrose’s 5-1 win over Annan Athletic at Links Park, writes Sarah McLean.

After Martin Boyle netted two early goals, Jamie Winter scored a penalty before Boyle got the next two. Annan Athletic managed to pull one back towards the end when Montrose seemed to fall asleep a little but there was no catching them.

The win took them back into third place with 38, two points behind Queen’s Park, who have three games in hand, and three ahead of Peterhead. If it wasn’t for Rangers who are storming ahead with 62 points then it would practically be a title race.

This Saturday, Montrose will be looking to close the gap between them and Queen’s Park even further when they travel to Hampden.

In the Second Division, Brechin suffered yet another postponement barely an hour before they were due to host East Fife at Glebe Park.

But Ray McKinnon’s side should have a busy week ahead of them if all goes to plan. On Tuesday night, as we went to press, Brechin were due to host league leaders Queen of the South. On Saturday they will travel to Stenhousemuir and next Tuesday they will be away again when they travel to Ayr United.

Forfar Athletic’s impeccable record against Ayr United came to an end on Saturday when they lost out 2-1 away from home.

Iain Campbell scored a penalty in the second half but the equaliser never came and the Loons travelled back to Station Park empty handed.

Dick Campbell’s side played Albion Rovers at home last night as we went to press and are due to host Stranraer on Saturday.

Arbroath closed the gap between them and Brechin with a 1-0 win against Alloa Athletic on Saturday.

A Derek Holmes goal was enough to bring Paul Hartley’s winning streak to an end.

On Tuesday night Arbroath hosted Alloa Athletic, who will be looking for revenge, then on Saturday they will host Ayr United at Gayfield.
